What are High Bays?
Simply, it’s a lot of light hanging from a long way up. The usual application is supermarkets, warehouses and industrial buildings where they need a lot of light but don’t want the fittings to get in the way of their day to day operations like forklifts and machinery.
Most High Bay Lighting takes two forms:
First are those massive UFO-looking lights that hang from high ceilings and give off a lot of light. Typically, around 400w or higher, they have a bulb a called a metal halide lamp that sends electricity through a mercury vapor to produce light. They often take a long time to heat up and generally last around 20,000 hours.
The other common high bay lights are troffers. A bunch of fluorescent tubes all together in one fitting, usually around 3-6 individual lamps. They usually total around 300-400watts and look terrible. Older fittings need constant attention with tubes and starters requiring replacement regularly.
One of the biggest problems with high bay lighting is that a large amount of it is often wasted before it gets to its desired destination; ie products shelves or working areas. The other is that they use a lot of electricity.
What are the Alternatives?
If you’re serious about costs and electricity savings then there’s really only one.
By now you’ve surely had experience with LED lights. They’re in your car, TV, phone, and home and they’re here to stay. LED high bay lights offer an all-round smoother, more consistent and quicker starting light at 20-40% of the older lights energy consumption. Or, in other words, our LED high bay lights are up to 80% more efficient than most fluorescent or incandescent lighting.
Benefits offered by LED high bay lighting
So, massive cost savings, huge environmental benefits, better light, what else do you want? Without bulbs, starters or massive heat waste the need for maintenance is gone. Our LED high bay lights all carry a 5-year warranty and can run for more than 70,00 hours.
Retro Fitting / replacement program /strong>
I’m glad you mentioned it. Retro fitment is super attractive to building owners and users because in most cases the existing electrical infrastructure is all still perfectly fine. It’s just a matter of out with the old and in with the new. The one thing that high bay lights often have in their favour is plugs. That’s right, a good old-fashioned wall socket way up there in the ceiling. This means fitment cost are massively reduced. In most cases we simply remove and recycle the old fittings and bulbs, then slightly alter the existing hanging apparatus and plug in the new ones.
LED high bay lights will reduce your monthly electricity usage by anywhere from 60 – 80% immediately. If you have even a couple dozen lights you’ll save thousands a year. This goes hand-in-hand with environmental savings. Less power is good. Your lighting aesthetics will be improved with prettier fittings and much nicer light. Your lighting maintenance program is gone. And fitment doesn’t cost as much as you might think it does. Most clients recover the full cost of replacement within 4 years, sometime closer to 2!
There’s never been more reasons to get LED high bay lights installed today and with Alectric at the helm you’ll have the LED experts managing it from design to completion.
